What is Detroit Slap Boxing?

Not many people know, but slap boxing is as American as apple pie. Slap boxing is like a rite of passage for many: young boys standing in front of each other, sparring with open hands; becoming tougher; proving to their friends and themselves that they are becoming a man. It taught us the basic fundamentals of protecting yourself. The key was that, in the end, we all lived to spar another day.

The Detroit Slap Boxing Company wants to bring that back fight to live another day - not only in Detroit, but in every community around the world.

Protecting yourself isn’t about violence, but instead the ability to have a strong mind and stand up for yourself. Detroit Slap Boxing gives you the ability to use both hard and soft combat skills. The soft side offers techniques that can be used in situations where more lethal options would be unnecessary, such as dealing with a handsy drunk or a bully in school. The harder styles are for dealing with situations such as attempted rape, kid knapping, or grievous bodily harm.

Practitioners of Detroit Slap Boxing will be able to transition between both styles or combine them together. The skills you will learn give you the ability to protect yourself without using a weapon. Detroit Slap Boxing believes that everyone has the right to protect themselves, but a weapon is not always necessary. However, if you do carry a weapon, Slap Boxing is also a good adjunct to your EDC.

Everyone, no matter their shape, size, or gender can learn Slap Boxing. We combine slaps and palm strikes with various martials art styles, including Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, wrestling and Judo. We teach a class that tailors to the needs and abilities of each participant. No one way is the same for everyone! The longer you train, the more you will learn to incorporate them all.

The Detroit Slap Boxing Company emphasizes three principals:

Love Yourself | You are worthy of protection; let no one take that from you.

Be Yourself | Everyone has the right to freely express themselves without fear of harm.

Protect Yourself | Make sure you & your loved ones are safe at all times.
